As the new school year begins at Hutchinson Community College, both freshmen and sophomores are adjusting to campus life.

Partridge freshman Stefan Larsson said that college feels different from high school in unexpected ways.

“A lot of it’s the same,” he said. “Honestly, I’d say it’s been feeling more like a task to get done. High school felt like I had to socialize and make friends, but college feels more like a series of tasks.”

Hutchinson freshman Justin Birdsall gave a more upbeat perspective.

“I like it a lot because in all of the classes, you’re gonna have a bunch of different people, so you’re going to meet a lot of people,” Birdsall said. “It’s nice, because in most of your classes, you have your projects and other stuff. Overall, I like it, though I do get a bit tired waking up early.”

Kristien Young reflected on the chance to build a fresh start.

“I enjoy it for the most part,” Young said. “I like that there are no false perceptions, that how people meet me and know me is solely from their experience and not from what other people say about me.”

While freshmen are still finding their footing, sophomores shared what they’ve appreciated most during their time at HutchCC. Jasmine Ford, Zachariah Perkins, and Thomas Porter all highlighted the strong sense of community.

“Definitely the community,” Ford said. “I love getting to know people and being involved — like being in clubs and stuff. It’s very neat.”

Perkins agreed.

“I’m going to miss all the people. I go to school all the time and I’m here 24/7 and it’s just cool.”

Porter likewise said the campus community was his favorite part.

“I’m also going to say the community, all the people I’ve been able to meet the lifelong friends I know I’m going to take away from here,” Porter said. “Just knowing that this is such a fun place where everybody’s able to come together and do activities that aren’t just academic-based.”
