At Hutchinson Community College on May 7, students and faculty members joined with their families to celebrate academic achievements and student leadership.

The event was through the combined Honor Student Synopsis and Leadership Synopsis event, which took place as a single program.

The program identified students who excelled academically together with students who achieved success through their leadership and service work, which demonstrated that academic success is not the only measure of achievement.

The honor program recognized students for their academic success and their dedication to maintaining high standards of academic performances. The Honor Student Synopsis demonstrated how students must work their way to academic excellence through their dedicated efforts.

The Leadership Synopsis focused on students who participated in campus and community development programs.

Cindy Keast, who serves as the executive director of the Hutchinson Endowment Association at HutchCC and graduated from Hutchinson with over 30 years of service to the institution, explained the purpose of the program.

“This group is designed to take students who are already leaders and help them further develop skills into the community and into their future,” Keast said. “Through community service, internships and leadership coursework, students are able to grow in ways that prepare them for what comes next.”

The leadership program students take part in service projects and internships and leadership classes which enable them to practice their skills in actual work environments.

Kaitlyn Kreutzer, a Hutchinson sophomore who studies psychology and is a leadership scholar, explained her community service work, because it provides positive benefits to the people in her community.

“Community service is important because it impacts the community,” Kreutzer said.

The event reached its conclusion through a joint recognition ceremony which honored students who demonstrated both academic excellence and leadership skills.
