Barbering is more than just giving haircuts. It is a historic craft with a long tradition.
At Hutchinson Community College, the barbering program lets students learn this skill while earning college credit and enjoying all the benefits of being a college student.
What is the difference between barbering and cosmetology? According to Alex Hass, HutchCC’s Cosmetology Program Coordinator, both programs are similar. Students in each program can do cuts, colors, and styles for men and women.
Barbers focus more on men’s haircuts, styles, and shaving. Cosmetologists cannot shave men’s faces. Barbers can also do facials and some manicures, but they mostly focus on men’s grooming. Cosmetologists focus more on women’s hair, nails, and skin services.
The barbering program at Hutchinson Community College is popular. This year, the college started two new barbering classes and a bridge class for licensed cosmetologists who want to earn a barber license in 500 hours instead of the usual 1,200 hours.
The barbering program at Hutchinson Community College is the only public barber program in the state. It gives students the chance to learn a trade, earn college credit, and prepare for a career in barbering.
