As Halloween approaches, Hutchinson Community College students prepare for a season filled with costumes, candy and campus festivities.
But beneath the excitement of the spooky season many students ask themselves, how much does all the fun actually cost?
For HutchCC students who are passionate about this season, the extra expense of Halloween can seem like a financial scare.
For HutchCC student Isabella Bergmeier, Halloween has always been about family and fun rather than overspending.
“Normally for Halloween, my family has a party at our house with a lot of food and candy for anyone to join,” she said.
When it comes to her own spending, Bella likes to keep things simple.
“The max I spend is like $30, and normally I buy stuff, but sometimes I try to find things around the house to use.” Bergmeier said.
Bergmeier once had a pricey Halloween, but not the way you might think.
“I’m not exactly sure what the most expensive costume I’ve ever had was,” Bergmeier said, “but one Halloween night I had to go to the ER because I busted my lip open and had to get stitches. That was probably my most expensive one.”
While that night didn’t go as planned, Bergmeier’s story shows us how unpredictable, and sometimes expensive, this holiday can be. Still, she believes the value and how one chooses to celebrate Halloween depends on the person.
“Yes, depending on the person,” she said. “For kids, I definitely think it’s worth the money.”
Bergmeier also said that social media has impacted on how some people prefer to celebrate this season.
“If they want to make a post and go viral, they’ll spend more time and money on their costume,” she said.
From elaborate costumes to social media-worthy posts, online attention and social influence can lead people to spend more money, time, and effort to get more likes on their social platforms. However, for many students at Hutchinson Community College, the true spirit of Halloween is about creativity, fun, and connection, rather than cost.
“We just have fun no matter what,” Bergmeier said.
