Drugs found in student dorm room

On April 19, a security employee of Hutchinson Community College reported finding drugs in a residence hall, according to Hutchinson Police Department records.

The resulting scene took place under the eyes of students and staff members.

However, the identification of the student involved cannot be revealed at the moment; the case is still under investigation.

The ongoing probe is active and Hutchinson police are in cooperation with HCC.

Both are declining comments regarding the recent drug bust.

Multiple drugs were found at the scene, according to students. However, the only drug mentioned by the police at this point was marijuana.

Active probe

Steve Dunmire, lead security officer of Hutchinson Community College, said, “At this time I can only say that law enforcement has an active investigation. There’s still information being provided and the college is still cooperating with law enforcement to answer any questions that they may have.”

However, Dunmire did give information as to how a drug bust like this is conducted.

“It can involve informants,” he said.“We have students that live on campus and students that live off campus.”

“Our students interact with other students or people in the community who are not students and most of them are legal activities but sometimes some of them are not so legal activities.”

“Given that, people hear things, people see things, people find themselves in situations sometimes that are an embarrassment to them and maybe that causes them to come into contact with local law enforcement,” he said.

“Sometimes they ask a question and sometimes law enforcement asks them the question, ‘Do you have information that may be valuable to us?’ Well, basically if you’re on the other side, you’re looking for a get-out-of-jail-free card.”

Basically, the bust is a complicated situation, Dunmire said.

“A lot of times it’s just a big puzzle. I hear things, I see things, and for the most part I’m going ‘Hmm, interesting. I’m not sure what that means.’”

“Students will comment about things they see on campus or off campus. I’ll visit with other people on campus and they’ll say I heard this I heard that.”

From that point on, police officers are notified of any further information about potentially illegal incidents.
