Throughout the first weeks of January, the Blue Dragon men’s basketball team won two games and lost three, which were their only losses of the season.

One of their losses was a triple-overtime game against Cowley College, where they lost by just two-points on Jan. 6. That started a three-game losing streak.

Over the course of a week, the Dragons lost to Cowley, Butler by one point, and Dodge City by six points.

The Dragons beat Colby 96-69 at Colby on Jan. 16.

Their record is now 17-3 overall and 6-3 in the Jayhawk West Conference.

Five Dragons scored double figures, but the top two were Samajae Haynes-Jones, Wichita, and Bashir Ahmed, Bronx, New York.

Haynes-Jones had 23 points, making four out of five three-pointers, and Ahmed added 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Moataz Aly, Alexandria, Egypt, became the sixth Dragon in team history to have 100 career blocks, after a block during the Jan. 16 game.

The Dragons out-rebounded their opponents, 50-35.

Hutch also held Colby 18 points under their average points scored a game.

To start off the first half, the score was tied 7-7, until the Dragons went on a 12-2 run after an Ahmed three-pointer.

The score was 19-9.

Colby answered with five unanswered points, 19-14.

The Dragons went on an 11-point run with seven minutes remaining in the half, with Hutch ahead 30-14.

As halftime approached, Hutch hit a buzzer-beater to take a 20-point lead.

Going into halftime, the score was 47-27.

The biggest lead the Dragons held was 30 points, which occurred twice, once at the eight-minute mark.

Hutch held the lead for the remainder of the game and won, 96-69.

The Dragons are scheduled to square off against Cloud County on Saturday, Jan. 23, in Concordia.
