It was a tragic day on Aug. 2, at Hospice House, where previous Hutchinson Community College student-athlete and basketball coach, Ryan Swanson died.

He had suffered from a medical emergency during a vacation in Branson, Missouri.

Swanson was born January 19, 1969, in Merriam. Swanson has been a gifted athlete since birth, so much that Swanson took HutchCC to and was a player on the 1988 NJCAA National Championship team. Swanson was named an Academic All-American in 1989.

Swanson returned to his alma mater,  coaching the men’s basketball team at HutchCC from 2006 to 2009. He was 66-29 record over three seasons.

Randy Stange, who is the Sterling College men’s basketball coach and was the HutchCC athletic director during Swanson’s coaching tenure, has good memories of Swanson.

“I always had admired him,” Stange said.

Stange thought that Swanson was a good coach and always enjoyed working with Swanson.  Stange thought fondly of the time spent with Swanson,

“He did so much for HCC as a player and as a coach,” Stange said. “I’m thankful for the time we had working together at HCC.”

After HutchCC, Swanson stayed active in the local basketball community, where he would coach youth teams. He would then take over for the boys basketball team as head coach at Buhler High School from 2015 to 2022.

Swanson and his wife Robin community also owned locally Phoenix Restoration and Phoenix Roofing.
