When it comes to never giving up, the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer showed a strong performance against the No. 6 seeded Dodge City on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Don Michael Field.
Haley Rogers, a star on the team scored the game-winning goal to give the Blue Dragons the win in double overtime in the first round of the Region 6 Tournament.
The Blue Dragons stuck it through having to change where they played. Due to rainy conditions, the game was moved from the grass field at the Salthawk Soccer Complex to artificial turf at Don Michael.
Rogers stood through the struggles of having to play on turf in the rain.
“We play on turf every other game so it never affected us, but we had to work a lot harder and adjust our passes just a little bit better because of the rain,” Rogers said.
Don Michael Field can get slick when it is rainy and the Blue Dragons found a way to come through with the victory through the storm.
Kaitlyn Edwards prayed that the game was finally over, that it wasn’t “their best soccer but we made it work.”
Coach Sammy Lane gave credit to Dodge City, but also to his team’s resiliency.
“Their team has found a way to win, but they don’t make any excuses along the way when they especially have players like Haley and Kat,” Lane said.
The Blue Dragons will play Butler next in what is expected to be the toughest game of their season.
