The Hutchinson Blue Dragons men’s basketball team opened up their season with a 104-53 win against Hesston College on Tuesday at the Sports Arena. This was coach Kyle Fisher’s first win in is his first game at HutchCC.
“Feels great man,” Fisher said. “I think it’s important that we play the non-conference part of the season well so it prepares us for what’s to come, but when you take new job it’s an entirely different game day routine so we need to learn how we’re gonna warm up, what time we are coming in the locker room so it’s nice for the guys to play somebody else after long month of practice so feels good to have that first win under a belt and got to find ways to learn from this and keep it up.”
The Blue Dragons came out breathing fire, with a 7-0 run to start the game. The run was capitalized with a fastbreak slam dunk by Dimitrius Dudley, to get the crowd on their feet and the momentum swung.
With the score being 49-25 in favor of the Blue Dragons at the end of the first half, they made sure to feed the ball inside plenty, using their size to pick up 20 points in the paint and 30 total rebounds.
“We are pretty big at every position, with the guards averaging about 6-4 or 6-5, and with the forwards, we have multiple guys that are 6-9 and 6-10, so it helps that everyone can rebound, and everyone can play defense very switchable and stuff, we trap very aggressive, we can be on the glass more, and makes us an overall better team,” freshman Bobby Cannon said.
The Blue Dragons ended up with 58 total rebounds, almost doubling Hesston’s total of 31. Cannon pulled in eight,
Fisher is also confident in his team’s ability to use their size effectively.
“I think guarding the ball, making them shoot jump shots, did a pretty good job keeping them out of the paint, and when you do that they are gonna shoot jump shots, but our size and our athleticism really just made it tough for them to score.”
Although this was a good win for the Blue Dragons, and a great start to their season, they are not satisfied.
“Well, we could’ve cleaned out the stuff but a win is a win at the end of the day, so I feel like we overall did well just getting to know each other more, and just figure out the way everybody plays and just continue to keep growing chemistry together,” freshman guard Bo Aldridge said.
The Blue Dragons will face off against Southwestern Christian at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
