The Hutchinson Community College football team regrouped and rebounded following a tough loss to Independence, as the Blue Dragons defeated Highland 20-7 on the road to improve to 3-3 on the season.

Sophomore Anwar Lewis rushed for 174 yardsm and freshman Deshon Singleton had two interceptions, as the Blue Dragons won at Highland for the first time since 2013.

HutchCC will finish its football regular season on Saturday at Dodge City. Then the postseason will start.

Volleyball – After winning the opening set and recording 13 team blocks, the Blue Dragons suffered a four-set loss to Dodge City, dropping the Blue Dragons’ record to 17-13.

The loss marks the first season since 2010 without a regular season win against Dodge City for the Blue Dragons.

Freshman Sophie Connor finished the match with 12 kills and six digs, while sophomore Kristina Head and freshman Blondie Penaflor recorded seven kills apiece.

Women’s basketball – The Blue Dragons find themselves in a familiar position, as they come in at No. 21 in the NJCAA preseason rankings, which marks the 13th-straight season that HutchCC finds itself on the preseason top-25 list.

HutchCC is sandwiched between two other KJCCC teams on the list, with Independence at No. 25 and Butler at No. 17. The Blue Dragons begin their season at the Sports Arena on Nov. 2 when they play the Bethany College junior varsity.

Men’s basketball – The men’s basketball team will start its 2021-2022 campaign from the outside looking in, as the Blue Dragons are under the receiving-votes category in the NJCAA preseason rankings.After longtime coach Steve Eck retired and took a job coaching at Kapaun Mount Carmel High School, HutchCC turns to former Cowley coach Tommy DeSalme in his first season with the Blue Dragons. HutchCC opens their season against Fort Scott on Nov. 3 at the Sports Arena.
