The Hutchinson Community College Women’s basketball team has been successful throughout the second round at the NJCAA Division 1 Championships in Lake Charles, La. 

Thursday, the 13th-seeded Blue Dragons upset the defending national champion and No.4 Northwest Florida State Raiders 64-53. 

The Blue Dragons victory was led by a strong defense. The Blue Dragons were down 21-10 in the first quarter. 

The Blue Dragons dominated Northwest Florida State in the second quarter, not allowing the Raiders to not score for 12 minutes, a span that included late first quarter and early third quarter. The Blue Dragons outscored 22 points during that span of time.  

The Blue Dragons were led by Freshman KaMrya Barber. She finished the game with 14 points and eight rebounds.  

The Blue Dragons held the Raiders to a season low of 21 rebounds, and had a great game of shooting with them shooting 42% from the field.  

The Blue Dragons are now 4-0 against Northwest Florida State, a mark that includes the 2024 national championship game. The Blue Dragons are 27-13 all-time in the NJCAA Tournament. 

The Blue Dragons are set to play the Quarterfinlas at 2:30 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Clarendon, Texas and Three Rivers, Mo.
