Dayana Acevedo-Trent was recently named volleyball coach at Hutchinson Community College.

Acevedo-Trent comes to Hutchinson with an extensive and impressive volleyball background, playing at Iowa Western Community College where she won back to back All American awards.

She then would transfer to University of Texas El-Paso to finish out her playing career, while also finishing a degree in psychology. She then would return to Iowa Western to begin her coaching career.

“I then returned to Iowa Western as the assistant coach. I coached there from 2016-2021 – last year winning the NJCAA national championship,” Acevedo-Trent said. “In the summer of 2021, I took the head coaching job at Odessa College where I stayed until this past fall. I posted a record of 98-29 in my four years there with two national tournament appearances and two regional championships.”

Hutchinson CC posted a 19-21 record last season. With plenty of talent returning to the squad, there are high hopes for the future.

“I believe that there is a lot of talent in this team already, just missing some players to complement what they already had. We have been hitting recruiting really hard, so I am excited to see what they can do together once August 1 hits. I believe that Hutchinson volleyball can do great things moving forward,” Acevedo-Trent said.

The returning players are already learning how to adapt to the new coaching environment.

“She brings a new energy to the team, and I think that she’s really going to make some changes to make us a nationally ranked team and to really get Hutchinson volleyball’s name out there,” redshirt freshman Tiana Simmons said.

Simmons is coming off a strong year, receiving an honorable mention KJCCC All Conference.

“The girls are hungry, and they want to learn and get better, so that is also super exciting. I am also looking forward to competing at a very high level – this conference is very competitive and tough,” Acevedo-Trent said. “Every coach in the conference does a really good job recruiting and putting really good teams together, so I really cannot wait to get started and see what we can do against them.”

The high level of competition doesn’t stop the Blue Dragons from having high expectations for next season.

“My expectation is to bring a ring back to Hutchinson for volleyball,” freshman Atlyn Proctor said.
