While Thanksgiving break is a time for most students to go home, spend time with family, and leave Hutchinson, it is quite the opposite for others.
Most of the international students don’t really have time to go home, so they find different ways to spend their Thanksgiving break.
“My plans for Thanksgiving are to go back home with one of my teammates to Lawrence for half the week, then go to another teammate’s house in Leavenworth for two days,” said freshman Lachlan Rosser, who is from Australia.
Rosser lives in the dorms on Hutchinson Community College’s campus, where most of the students will be leaving.
“My plans for the upcoming break are to stay in Hutch, I didn’t think it was smart to drive back to Canada because it’s such a long drive for such a short break. Also my family already celebrated Thanksgiving in October for Canadian Thanksgiving, so I wouldn’t even really be able to spend much time with family because they’ll be at work the whole time. The two full days of travel didn’t really make sense for me to go home for only four days with my family,” sophomore Tyson Vassart said, who is from Canada.
Vassart lives off campus and plans to hang out with his roommates and girlfriend.
“When I stay in Hutch, I’m going to stay with a couple teammates for the first two days,” Vassart said. “Then my girlfriend is going to be driving down from North Dakota to spend the week with me as she has the same break as us. I’ll give her a tour of hutch, the campus and some of our facilities.”
Although the international students won’t be able to go home for Thanksgiving, they are all looking forward to the winter break that all students will get.
“I have already booked my flights home for Christmas break,” Rosser said. “I am really excited because I’m a long way from home to getting to be back for 3 weeks will be great.”
“Yes, I am going home for Christmas break,” Vassart said “I’m excited to see my family as I haven’t since school started in August,” Tyson said. “I am also excited to go skating and play hockey with my friends. Just enjoy the cold snowy weather.
