Helmets were not the only thing getting dropped off for the top-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team on Saturday, but they popped off with their win against No. 14 Dodge City on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.
With a 49-0 win against Dodge City, winning their ninth win in a row against the Conquistadors, it gave the HutchCC second string quarterback Christain Johnson a chance to shine.
Johnson, a redshirt freshman, has always put the time and effort into football when it comes to studying film, to watching football as a kid. Football has always been Johnson’s first love.
Most importantly, he always tries to improve himself inside and outside of the field
Johnson said that this week was a great week for more improvement.
“Keeping our record is important,” Johnson said. “Preparing for this week we knew we were playing a ranked opponent. We knew we needed to go 1-0.”
Going into a ranked opponent you don’t know the outcome. Games can just flip around in a second if they aren’t taken seriously.
Johnson knew that Dodge City had won its previous two games.
“We knew not to take them as a joke, our intentions this week are going 1-0, and to just keep moving forward,” Johnson said, who completed 9 of 15 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown to go with 25 yards rushing.
Defense played a big role in this game by not letting Dodge City put any numbers on the board. It was Hutchinson’s second straight shutout.
Devan Lowe, a defensive tackle, led the defensive with four tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
With such a big lead, Lowe said was glad that he was able to stay cooled off in the unseasonable October heat.
“With good trainers, amazing things on the sideline to keep us cooled down is really beneficial to us,” Lowe said.
The Blue Dragons next play Saturday at Independence.
