The Hutchinson Blue Dragon defense has been stifling all year. Throughout the so far undefeated season, top-ranked HutchCC has given up 15 points.

In their win against Navarro, the Blue Dragons only gave up six points. Statistically, they were dominant. They held the Bulldogs to only 229 total yards of offense. On third down, the Bulldogs were only 3 of 16. HutchCC had five sacks.

In game two, the defense gave up only seven points and only 52 yards of total yards against Ellsworth. They also forced three turnovers. They gave up their first touchdown of the year during garbage time with multiple third-stringers in the game.

The dominance continued into the Blue Dragons’ last game against Iowa Central. The defense did not give up any points. All two of Iowa Central’s points came on a safety caused by its own defense.

Through three games, the numbers are ridiculous. As a team, the Blue Dragons have forced five interceptions and have recovered four fumbles. They have 15 sacks as a team through three games and three defensive touchdowns.

Not only does a good defense keep the other team out of the end zone, it also helps the offense. Coach Drew Dallas knows how important defense is.

“It makes offense a lot easier when you constantly keep the other team behind the chains,” Dallas said after the Ellsworth win. “It gets our offense on the field more to score more.”

K’Von Sherman has been a constant threat on defense. The redshirt freshman has 16 tackles and has added a sack. The linebacker from Pearland, Texas is the team’s leading tackler.

Daniel Brown, who is a Sophomore Defensive Tackle, has been in the backfield all season. He has four sacks through three games and has added five-and-a-half tackles for loss.

With seven games left to go in the regular season, the Blue Dragon defense shows no signs of slowing down. Their next game will be 1 p.m. Saturday against Coffeyville at Gowans Stadium. This game should be another defensive game for HutchCC’s defense. Coffeyville is 0-3 this season but all three games have been close, and the Red Ravens are known for a staunch defense.
