The Advanced Photography class is getting a fresh look in its photography studio.
The class, taught in Lockman Hall, has been around for about 10 years.
It was organized by Alan Montgomery, journalism and photography instructor.
When Montgomery was researching ways to set up the studio, he sought advice from local photographers, including Dwight Ferguson.
At the time, Ferguson had a large studio in downtown Hutchinson. He recommended “Alien Bees” studio strobe lights. The lights are high quality, adjustable, and durable.
Using grant money from several sources, the studio was assembled with four Alien Bees lights and backdrops, which include an all-white backdrop made from a 20-foot sheet of linoleum.
Over 10 feet wide, the backdrop covers one wall and extends 10 feet out onto the floor, which provides a white background for portraits. Rails are attached to the walls to allow for colored muslin backdrops to be hung, allowing for variety when students are making portraits
Recently, the floor portion of the white vinyl backdrop became scuffed and soiled, due to traffic. It was repainted with a rolled-on coat of white latex paint, making it look good as new.
Along with the new paint, two more studio lights have been added to the studio.
Students use professional-grade digital cameras, with radio transmitters to fire the lights as shutter buttons are pushed.
The advanced photography class is now looking for more models for photo shoots which will be free of charge, with each model provided with a CD of the pictures taken of them.
