Derrick Kayongo, founder of the Global Soap Project, will be speaking as a part of the Dillon Lecture Series on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Sports Arena.

The Global Soap project is a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide soap to people who don’t have access to it.

The soap given out by the organization is made from recycled hotel soap bars and is shipped to roughly 32 countries around the world, primarily to Africa.

Kayongo immigrated to the United States in 1981, moving from Uganda to Atlanta.

He founded the global Soap Project in 2009, with help from his wife, Sarah.

While no longer running the organization, Kayongo still follows the efforts of the health-promoting entity. He participates in speaking at events around the country to help raise support for the nonprofit group.

Kayongo was named as a CNN Hero in 2011, for helping save lives in many countries, with the soap program.

The project has distributed 1.5 million bars of soap so far.
