Dragon’s Tale, Collegian win awards at KCM Conference

Dragon’s Tale magazine and Collegian newspaper staff members left Wichita’s Drury Plaza Hotel on April 13, with a variety of awards from the annual Kansas Collegiate Media Spring Conference.

Both of Hutchinson Community College student publications staff attended the event on April 12 and 13.

The students were able to attend different workshops and learn about different aspects of journalism.

Workshops featured speaker such as Brett Akaagi, who spoke to groups about “What’s wrong with the news media today,” a popular workshop among the Collegian staff members.

HCC students explored workshops ranging from finding a voice in the chaotic world of media, telling stories through images, and creating unique movie reviews.

Attendees of the conference also had the chance to interact and learn from each other during the “round table discussions,” with topics ranging from organizing a newspaper redesign to starting a sex column.

Andrew Tash, an HCC instructor, hosted a workshop featuring the HCC unmanned aerial vehicle.

Tash showed other colleges the usage of a UAV in media and the movie production industry.

Each day at the workshops and banquet, awards were announced. The Dragon’s Tale magazine staff won the following awards:

Page Design – Shannon Emery – 2nd

Sports/Action Photography – Joseph Griffin – Honorable Mention; Jamey Lies – 3rd

News/Event Writing – Callie White – 3rd

Caption Writing – Kelsea McFarland – Honorable Mention

Caption Writing – Brittany Inskeep – 3rd ; Joseph Griffin – 1st

Table of Contents – Jordan Horsch – 2nd

Headline/Art Design – Brittany Inskeep – 2nd

Mini-Feature/Sidebar Writing – Brittany Inskeep – 2nd
