At 8 a.m. on a Monday, many students may still be in bed, or just getting up and getting ready for school, but not Aaron Honeycutt. He’s already up and about, designing and drawing out anything and everything, from large houses to tiny lawn mower parts.
Honeycutt is a Hutchinson Community College sophomore Computer Drafting Technology major, he’s an honors student, and for his honors project, he designed what he calls “Historic meets Modern.” He wanted to make a house, but unsure of how to go about it. Hhe started brewing up ideas with styles he liked, such as the Victorian style, Italianate, and Bungalow. He wanted to be an architect when he was younger, until he found other things while attending HutchCC, and his honors project truly shows his ambition for design.
“I just like creating things, like playing with Legos as a kid. I just couldn’t wait to get my model put together and see what it became,” Honeycutt said.
Honeycutt is part of the CAD program at HutchCC. What is CAD? In its technical term, it means Computer-Aided Drafting, but Computer Drafting Professor Tracy Chadwick said that his students do much more than that.
“My students will go on and work for architects or engineers, and they’ll draw out the designs for anything their employer could need,” Chadwick said.
Honeycutt does this. He explains how he works with the college in the facilities office, doing floor plans for the head of facilities at HutchCC. He applies everything he’s learned to creating something more, something better with what he is given.
For example, the cosmetology building plans to do some remodeling soon, changing the front and back of the interior.
“I redid the front and back, and designed it so they’ll have about 15 more chairs, with space to spare,” Honeycutt said.
Honeycutt’s ambition and passion he has for it spills over into everything he does. Creating something from nothing and realizing that it will actually become physical, that will be used and perceived by others, is a wondrous achievement.
