Hutchinson Community College has a strong men’s cross country team this season, with four Blue Dragons placing top four at the Terry Masterton Twilight Classic

It was a successful meet for the Blue Dragons, as sophomore Cornelius Kogo won the race.

Kogo had an immaculate performance in winning the race. Kogo, from Kenya, is a sophomore from Kenya.

“I’m so glad I found a chance to be running at Hutch,” he said.

Kogo has always been a grinder when it comes to running, with a history that includes his dad running and training for the Olympics.

“My father got me into running,” Kogo said. “I just loved the way he was running. Ever since I’ve been young, I’ve been learning through him.”

Running in Kenya is a way of life for many. It’s what can provide for their families.

“People run in Kenya to sustain their families,” he said. “Athletes running in Kenya brings something to the table. That’s why it’s so competitive in Kenya. You would typically find a lot of people running.”

Second-year Blue Dragons cross country coach Jafet Molinares said Kogo arriving at Hutch included a bit of luck.

“He had reached out to us. We basically guided him to us,” Molinares said. “it’s not much that we recruited him, it was just the right time for himself and for us, and he kinda just dropped from heaven.”

Kogo said he has set some goals for his team and himself this year.

“I hope to run the five-mile in under 23 minutes,” Kogo said. “That is my big target and I hope to make it.”

With the team, there is passion, commitment and real brotherhood with this group.

“We put in a lot of hard work,” Molinares said. “We have a lot of returners from last year that will help us lead.”

Being in a competitive NJCAA, one of the Blue Dragons top goals is staying fit.

”The biggest thing is trying to stay healthy,” Molinares said. “If we can stay healthy, have the right people, and we are just as excited for the journey and the process of making it happen.”
