The Collegian Chooses – Our Endorsements

Life gives you choices every single day. What to have for lunch, what to wear for the day. Some choices are bigger than others. When we make these choices, we may not be aware of the consequences that we may face.

Every four years, the citizens of the United States of America have a choice.

Tuesday, Nov. 5, is one of those times.

In light of the choices we all make that day, The Hutchinson Collegian is pointing out some of the choices they make on the daily as a staff, as well as encouraging you to make the same ones.

We choose equality for all.

No one person in this life is better than another. The amount of money in one’s bank, or lack thereof, does not make them less. Equality does not mean everyone getting the same, it means giving everyone the same fighting chance. Let’s say two people are behind a fence, one can see clearly over the top and the other is unable to see what’s happening. Say you gave both a milk crate to stand on. The taller person would still be able to see, while the shorter of the two would only gain a little bit of height and would see just over the fence, if they’re lucky. While theoretically, it’s fair, it’s not equal. However, if you gave both items to the shorter person, they would now be able to see over the fence, as would the taller person. That’s the equality our country seems to be lacking.

We choose freedom.

Whether that be freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the freedom to make your own decisions when it comes to your health and body, the freedom to express yourself in any way you deem necessary. Nobody besides you should make those choices, as long as the choices you make don’t infringe on the rights of others. In 2024 however, it now comes down to a choice of whether or not those freedoms are at risk of being lost.

But no matter what you choose come Nov. 5 …

We choose love.

We may not all agree with one another. We may not understand why someone believes what they believe. But at the end of the day, we’re all just trying to make the choices we think are best for ourselves and the legacy we leave behind.
