If you live in the dorms at Hutchinson Community College, you probably know who Darrell Adams is. Or, maybe you’ve even seen him in the student union.
Adams is a Kansas native, originally from Wichita and attending Wichita North. Adams then chose to continue his education at HutchCC.
“It was close to home but there was still distance,” Adams said.
At the time, Adams was an RA and was active around campus. As it approached the end of his sophomore year, Dana Hinshaw – Director of Student Affairs and Campus Safety – offered Adams a part-time job He took the job, and when the full-time job he has now had become open, he took the position. Adams has been at HutchCC for 20 years.
Adams is the Lead Residence Hall Supervisor. He is also a co-sponsor for the Circle K club. He attends all the meetings the club has, the socials it holds, and organizes the partners nights. He is also on the campus activities board and helps organize the activities on campus like: karaoke night, homecoming events and more.
Adams is also part of campus safety, as well as helping with the clothing closet and food pantry. He also helps out the Student Government Association and CAB.
“I’m the muscle,” Adams said.
At the beginning of the 2025 fall semester, Ayden Brooks, a freshman in the fire science program, Brooks was active the first week. He went to all the events on campus, and Shelby Branting, the Director of Residence Life and Student Activities, offered Brooks a job in the residence office working with Darrell.
Adams and Brooks have since developed a friendship.
“Ayden’s my guy, he’s a good kid,” Adams said.
“He’s a great dude,” Brooks said.
These two work on fixing lights, toilets, and doing other maintenance work around the dorms. They also help out with events on campus, whether it be organizing the event, setting the event up, or helping work the event.
These guys do a little bit of everything.
When asked what his favorite thing is about his job, Adams said, “helping out the students.”
Every day is different and there are never two days alike. Adams has meetings every week and does his maintenance in the dorms.
If students see or hear Adams around campus, just know he’s a guy who wears many hats.
