CANYON, Texas – The Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons’ football team earned a spot to play in the NJCAA 2025 Division 1 national championship on Wednesday. The distance of over 370 miles did not prevent Blue Dragons fans from coming out to support the team on their journey to becoming champions for the second year in a row.

The Blue Dragons lost 28-10.

Onna Dowling Perdomo, a Blue Dragon soccer player, was born in England but made her way down to the Lone Star State to cheer on the football players.

After having her flight home to Birmingham, England, moved, she decided that rather than being stuck in the dorms for days until she could go home for the holidays, she would support her fellow athletes. “I think (the game) will be close,” said Perdomo when spoken to during the fan pregame tailgate at West Texas A&M.

A well-known figure around the HutchCC campus, Darrell Adams, also made his way down to Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium to watch the Blue Dragons. Adams said he “drove six hours” and was hopeful for a win but supports the players regardless.

Heather Dallas, the better half of Blue Dragons coach Drew Dallas, has the privilege of seeing the team and her husband “develop into a bigger team unit” as the season progresses. In the second game of the 2025 football season, HutchCC played against Iowa Western, and looking back at that game compared to now, Dallas thinks that “We are definitely a better team now than we were then, but so are they.”

“Every game we play them is back and forth … you never know,” Dallas said when asked for a pregame prediction.

Many HutchCC students, staff, family, and fans drove the six hours from Hutchinson to support the Blue Dragons football team, who fell short of the victory. While the Blue Dragons did not become the 2025 NJCAA champions, they are rich in support from HutchCC.
