As the holiday season approaches, more and more holiday specials are becoming readily available from the comfort of your home. Channels such as the Hallmark Channel have become iconic throughout the years for their cozy Christmas-time films.
Those opposed to Hallmark movies make the argument that they are repetitive and unrealistic.
For me personally, I love these films. I love to cozy up on the couch with my own chai latte and watch small-town boy land big-city girl. I love to see a princess who’s pretending not to be a princess fall in love with a commoner boy. Nothing excites me more than seeing a grumpy character begin to buy into the Christmas magic. And while we’re at it, let’s all come together to save Christmas by making everyone believe in Santa Claus.
All this to say, I understand the opposition towards this genre of movies. I understand, wanting to be surprised and not being able to see the twist coming from 30 minutes in. I understand wanting to see something new rather than regurgitated storylines.
Perhaps these films are a representation of the over-commercialization of Christmas. There was a time when you could go into a store and not be assaulted with red and green everywhere. This time is long past, as Christmas trees go up in October and Black Friday deals start before Halloween has ended. The over-consumerism of our American society has resulted in each holiday needing their own specific decor, outfits, and yes, even films. I understand that this might be a warning sign of bigger issues, but I’m just a girl, and I just love Christmas.
For me personally, I find comfort in being able to know that in the end they will save Christmas and in the end the small-town boy will get the girl. Maybe it’s the white woman in me. Maybe it’s my parent who showed me 90s rom-coms over and over, but I buy into the Christmas magic of Hallmark films, and I think it’d be more fun if you would too.
