On the outskirts of Hutchinson, Reno Valley Middle School may appear to be an ordinary school. But for years, stories among staff and students have painted a picture which comes from the past at the school still linger.
As part of the USD 309 Nickerson and South Hutchinson district, this school holds more than just memories. According to numerous reports, at least three different spirits are said to haunt the school.
One of the most frequently mentioned and recurring spirits that haunt the school is the former custodian, believed to watch after the school long after she passed.
One unusual incident involved a therapy dog named Allie, who once worked with students on campus. Multiple students and staff claim that Allie would routinely pause and stare at an unseen presence near the rear tech lab door which is where the custodian was most known to stand during her years at the school.
The custodian spirit is described as a protective and peaceful presence. Her spirit is seen more as a watchful guardian than a threat. Though no solid evidence has ever been provided, it’s said that a single photograph exists with her in it and is what fuels people to still believe she exists at the school.
The seventh grade girls restroom has earned an unsettling reputation. Two things make the restroom unsettling. People report that the restroom tends to have dramatic temperature drops, an unsettling atmosphere, and weird unexplainable noises.
A few years back, a few people from The Collegian went to the school to find out more about the creepy things happening around the school. While visiting the seventh grade girls restroom, they noticed all the stall doors were found open except for one. When trying to open the stall they found it shut without any sign of it being locked.
Another thing said to happen in that same restroom is when two students snapped a mirror selfie, they discovered a third face staring back at them in the photo. It was only the two of them in the restroom.
Another spirit said to haunt the school is that of a young girl, often heard but never seen. Several teachers have recalled hearing the faint cries of a child calling for her mother.
When staying after school, a teacher had experienced being in her classroom late at night when she suddenly heard a little girl shouting in the hallway. Thinking it was another teacher’s children, she waited for the girl to appear but when no one appeared, she looked outside to check for other cars but the parking lot was empty.
A similar experience near the gym doors when a teacher was walking past, They heard a little voice whisper “Mommy,” There weren’t any children in the building at the time.
