The Hutchinson Community College football team is still bringing the fire.
The top-ranked Blue Dragons conquered and shutdown No. 10 Coffeyville by not letting them score the entire game, winning 31-0 on a rainy Saturday night at Gowans Stadium.
LT Robinson, a sophomore wide receiver, played an amazing game, catching his second touchdown of the season.
“I’ve been keeping my head down and working I’ve been looking forward to this game since I saw it on the schedule,” Robinson said. “And that’s what’s been lighting the fire in me.”
The bond that sophomore quarterback Christian Johnson has with his receivers are unmatched. Johnson completed passes to six different receivers out of his 12 completions.
“It started in the summertime, throughout the summer we were all together everyday,” Robinson said. “We all made sure that we were together, working on the field throwing different types of throws that we would see in a game. We would also hang out with each other outside of football as well.”
Robinson had an amazing catch in the rain. Johnson threw a 76-yard bomb and Robinson caught it through the pressure.
“I ran a post route,” Robinson said. “When I ran that post route I didn’t see the corner. So I’m running, and Christain held that ball for a minute, so I went through all his progressions, I saw him fall back, and I saw the ball go. And the only thing I was thinking was ‘I gotta get that ball.’
“After I catch the ball, I stumbled a little bit, but then I catch my balance and my first one or two steps are a sprint, but then I look down at the corner and I see him running slow, so im just thinking ‘I don’t even have to run that fast to score.’ So I started striding to get to the end zone. I haven’t scored since the first game, so I tried my best to get back to the end zone.”
The defence did not go unnoticed with the Blue Dragons not allowing any points.
Jason Wilson, a sophomore defensive end from Edmond, Okla., played a role in Coffeyville not scoring.
“We practice hard everyday, and we take it day by day everyday,” Wilson said. “We don’t take any opponents lightly. So we just went out there and played how we were supposed to.”
Wilson even scored, turning a 15-yard fumble recovery into a touchdown, making it the fifth touchdown for the Blue Dragons’ defense.
“I was at the right place at the right time. I saw the ball on the floor so I was thinking ‘Christmas came early,’” Wilson said. “We did the job so we can be more than happy because of that.”
Blue Dragons coach Drew Dallas was happy with how the team was focused during the week.
“Our guys were prepared the right way throughout the course of the week, and the mentality was right from the get go, so it was fun to see them just go out and execute on a high level,” Dallas said. “The defense played really well – their preparation is unmatched right now, and the offense kinda got a groove there. We stayed patient through the process and executed. We just wanted to make sure that we maintained focus in the second half. I thought we did but certainly some things we need to correct as we move forward.”
The Blue Dragons now prepare to play No. 9 Butler Community College in El Dorado on Saturday. Butler was the only team to beat Hutchinson last year.
“We’ve got to do the rinse and repeat, refocus and enjoy this night but we have a good opponent in a rivalry game,” Dallas said. “So we just got to prepare in the right way, like we’ve been doing all year and then find a way to go 1-0.”
