Women have always been a part of the American workforce, whether they were matchstick girls in the 18th-century slums or typists in the early 20th century.
The rules for women, however, are different than those for men. To be respected, women must be good at their jobs, but not so good that their male counterparts feel threatened.
They must be able to joke with “the boys” and not take it too seriously, because it was “just a joke.”
They must be beautiful, but not too beautiful as to not be respected. To be overly beautiful is to be assumed underqualified and undervalued.
They must be put together, but not so much that they seem like they try too hard. 2025 brought about a new trend among the younger generations called “office siren core.” The smoky eyes, short skirts, high heels, and tight blouses that this trend consists of bring to mind the treatment of these women in their respective offices.
To be beautiful as a woman is to be assumed to be less intelligent, but to be unattractive is simply a crime. The politics that involve women in the workforce’s morning routine are more complicated than they may seem. This should not be the case. A woman should be allowed to wear what they wish while being respected in the same manner and with the same rubric that men are compared against.
This is not to say that I believe club attire is appropriate to wear into the office, but that women should not have to fight this unspoken battle to not be belittled or undervalued in the office.
Hopefully someday soon, women will be able to walk into their offices without makeup and not be asked if they’re feeling all right. They’ll be able to wear the same sweater twice in a week and not get double takes. They will be able to dress up because it makes them feel confident and not have assumptions of inadequacy or trying too hard thrown at them. Until women’s value is not measured in accordance with their beauty, I’m afraid that trends such as “office siren” will continue to arise.
