There’s a story that floats around the Hutchinson Public Library about a ghost named Ida Day.

Day used to work at the library decades ago, and some people believe she still does — just in a different way.

“This is part of the original building,” one library staff member said. “Ida oversaw the move from the old building on 5th and Main to here. She was very strict and liked things neat and organized.”

Day was known for being dedicated to her job, but after she died in a car accident while moving to California, people started saying she came back — just like she once promised she would.

The first person to claim they saw Day was a librarian named Rose Hale.

“She was in the basement and looked up the stairs and saw someone standing there,” the staff member said. “She thought it was her coworker, but when she looked back, no one was there.”

Another time, Hale was talking to who she thought was her coworker — until the real one walked in. That’s when she realized she’d been talking to someone, or something, else.

Since then, people have brought ghost-hunting equipment into the library, hoping to catch proof that Day is still around. No one’s found anything solid yet, but some swear they’ve seen books fall off shelves or felt someone nearby when no one was there.

“Maybe it’s a ghost,” the librarian said with a laugh. “Or maybe it’s just gravity.”

Even though the librarian worked there for almost 20 years, he’s never seen Ida himself.

“Maybe she thinks I’m doing a good job and doesn’t want to scare me,” he said with a laugh.

Visitors say if you listen closely in the basement or around the old stairwell, you might hear something — or someone — still tidying up after all this time.

Because if the stories are true, Ida Day might just be making sure the library she loved so much stays neat and quiet, exactly how she left it.
