Here at Hutchinson Community College around 10% of students live in the dorms.
HutchCC can house more than 500 students with the traditional, suites and apartments. Have you ever seen any of these dorm rooms? When you go on your tour to visit the campus they show you a traditional room on the first floor in Elland Hall, which is the girls floor. The room looks homey, warm, clean and comfy. You don’t get to walk around the other rooms on campus or the bathrooms.
When I was planning the layout of my room, I would just think of the show room and base mine off of it. When I got to Hutch on move-in day, I was shocked at the state of my room. I moved my dresser, closet, and desk around to create a more open floor plan in the room, but to my surprise the floors looked as if they were never cleaned before.
Now, remind you, this was the day I moved into my dorm room, not now almost two months later. Since moving in, things in our dorm have only gotten worse. The air conditioning unit in our room leaks water all over the floor, and even worse after it rains. The air vents in the bathroom don’t work, so when we take showers the moisture stays in the room and causes bacteria like mold to grow.
We have leaking toilets and sinks that we’re just supposed to deal with. We moved into the room with bug and mice traps throughout the suite. Thank God we got them removed. All these things going wrong in just one room really makes me wonder if these dorm rooms really get cleaned or any attention over the summer.
This year, we were told that the students would have to clean their own rooms, which is fine, but I’d like to live in a place that was clean to start with and not have to clean the grime off the walls and under the counters from the previous students.
The mold situation in every hall of the dorm building is insane, the lack of working A/C units and air vents is unacceptable. Students pay a lot of money to have the luxury of living a block away from campus, but yet they can’t move into a clean dorm room.
When I went to hang my wall decorations up I had to disinfect the wall prior so that the 3M strips would stick to the wall and not fall off. The lack of care these dorm rooms get is disgusting and needs to improve soon. Maintenance should be done and checked to see if it’s in working conditions before the students move in during the fall.
