What began as a simple extracurricular activity and hobby has grown into a lifelong passion for Mattie Galliher, a 2025 Trinity Catholic graduate now beginning her first season playing volleyball at Hutchinson Community College.

“I started playing volleyball in fourth grade,” Galliher said. “I mainly did it because all of my friends did it.”

What started as a way to spend time with friends quickly became a commitment that would shape her goals, her college experience, and her love for the game.

Now in her first year with the Blue Dragons, Galliher has already begun making her mark.

“I play middle, and what I enjoy most about my position is being able to be involved in every play,” she said. “Whether it’s blocking or hitting, I love that I get to contribute on both sides of the court.”

Her love for the game and her enthusiasm for competing at a higher level led her to pursue volleyball in college, as it provides her with opportunities beyond academics, such as friendship, discipline, and personal growth.

Like many athletes transitioning to college, Galliher has faced her own challenges.

“The biggest obstacle I have had to overcome is the busy schedule, and trying to find a balance between school and sports,” she said.

Balancing practice, games, and coursework hasn’t been easy, but she handles it with the same passion she brings to every game.

“During high pressure moments, I try to focus on the things I can control,” she said.

That mindset has helped her stay strong in both athletics and academics.

Galliher credits much of her inspiration to Lauren Stivrins, a standout middle blocker who played at the University of Nebraska.

“I’ve always admired her energy and confidence on the court,” Galliher said.

Her proudest moment so far has been earning the chance to play at the collegiate level, since it represents years of dedication and countless hours of practice.

“It’s something I’ve always dreamed of,” Galliher said.

As the season progresses, Galliher’s ambitions are as much about character as they are about competition.

“My goal for this year is to be the best teammate I can be,” she said. “Trying to be a good, supportive teammate on and off the court is very important.”

For Galliher, playing for the Blue Dragons  has become more than just an experience; it’s become a home filled with support, friendship, and loyalty.

“My favorite part about playing volleyball at HutchCC is definitely my teammates and coaches,” she said. “I’ve made so many new friendships while playing here, and the coaches are very supportive and want to do their best to get us to the next level.”

With her determination, positive attitude, and growing experience, it’s clear that Mattie Galliher is ready to make the most of every opportunity, one serve, one block, and one season at a time.
