The first year of college is a time marked by excitement, confusion, growth, and many mistakes. From underestimating the importance of a study schedule, to thinking that too much ramen or caffeine could sustain a person indefinitely. Many students arrive on campus with high hopes and end their first year with a very different perspective, but alas with many anecdotes and lessons learned.

With a new generation of students arriving on campus this fall, sophomores and recent graduates may be able to help by answering – What do you wish you had known in your first year of college? Their answers offer guidance not only for surviving but thriving, the college experience.

Carolina Castillo, who graduated from Trinity Catholic High School and is now a sophomore at Hutchinson Community College said, “Enjoy the freedom and focus on your studies.”

Sharing advice for new students, taking into account that going from high school to college is a -new and unknown experience, not only in terms of studies but also in the social aspect.

Sarah Guerrero, a Trinity Catholic High School alumna and 2024 graduate, is a sophomore at HutchCC, added, “Get involved with things outside classes so you can make connections with other students, and also have a break from focusing on just school work.”

Castillo agreed.

“Becoming friends with the people you sit by in class will make your year go by fast and have a great day everyday,” Castillo said.

The transition from high school to college can be overwhelming for many of us, but it’s a time that shapes us as human beings. Don’t be afraid to try new things, the first year of college isn’t about doing everything right and perfect, but rather about trying and making mistakes to learn from them, and about creating bonds with people who may become lifelong friends.

“Enjoy every day as if it was your last,” Castillo said.
