Mental health is affected by many things, but something that has really come up in the world is the impact that social media has on someone’s life.
It’s understandable why people have social media. Everyone has it, so why wouldn’t the next person get it? But people who deal with poor mental health and are constantly seeing changes to their mood should consider taking breaks from it at least some of the time.
Smartphones have an addictive quality to them. Many people lose their interest in certain hobbies and sports, they tend to feel lonely when they’re not getting messages from family and friends constantly, and they may have an addiction so strong, it’s hard for them to put it down.
Yes, smartphones are good to talk to family and friends who live away, but they can also have the opposite effect. When someone goes out with family or friends and they’re constantly on their phone the whole time, it’s very hard to connect with someone again or feel like you still have the same friends after that. Getting ignored is something that hurts everyone, but especially when someone’s on their phone. It can honestly affect someone and their relationships if they’re just always on their phones with no real conversations.
Being on a phone allows a person to see many things they wish they had or they wish they were doing. Seeing people out and about on vacation or at the big college party and this other person wasn’t invited, that stuff hurts. Having to learn to turn off the phone and stop worrying about it is one of the hardest things to do.
One of the biggest reasons for increased depression rates is social media and constantly being on a cellular device. Some ways to prevent your mental health going that way because of being on a phone too often is to simply put it down. Go outside, play board games with loved ones, go hang with friends. Just turn off your phone. It is easier said than done, but so worth it in the end to save your mental health.
