With finals finishing this week, and the end of the year approaching fast, Hutchinson Community College students have mixed emotions about graduating and the year ending.

“The next step is probably what I’m most looking forward to,”said Wichita sophomore Josh Cline, who also plays baseball. “A new experience with a new school, and a new team. Playing two sports is probably what I’m most excited about.”

Cline is moving on to play baseball and be a part of the bowling team at his next school.

For many students, the end of the year means the start of a new journey. Either going on to another school to finish an athletic career or a degree, or going into a new job.

For a majority of the students though, it means they can go home for the summer.

“I am excited to go home,” Shawnee freshman Adam Seymour. “It has been a great, but long year, so I am excited to go back and see my friends that I grew up with.”

Are students looking forward to the end of the school year, like they used to in elementary, middle in high school?

“Am I looking forward to the end of the year? Yes and no,” Cline said. “Similar to what I said in the first question, new opportunities. And no, because Hutch is everything I’ve known for the past two years. Love everything about it here so, of course, I’m not fully looking forward to it.”

There are things that students are dreading, no matter the excitement level, like finals and packing up dorm rooms.

“I am easily dreading finals the most to end the school year,” Seymour said. “I have big tests in all of my classes that I am pretty anxious about. I am also dreading having to pack up my dorm room because it will definitely be a pain.”

Many student-athletes are also not looking forward to the end of their seasons, which means leaving their teammates.

“What I’m dreading most is the end of the season. It can end any day soon and that’s going to be the end of Hutch for me,” Cline said.
