Spring break is one of the most anticipated breaks for most students. For Hutchinson Community College, Spring Break falls from March 17-March 21.
The five day break comes as a much needed reprieve for Wichita freshman, Emmi Roberts.
“I’m going back home to see my friends and family,” Roberts said.
While Roberts is excited for the upcoming break, knowing that there won’t be any other breaks during the spring semester is daunting.
“It kind of makes me more anxious. Knowing there’s only one five day break before I have to really crack down to make sure I get to the end of the semester is a little rough,” Roberts said.
Lauren Nelson, a Nickerson sophomore, said that she feels similarly.
“I would love to move some of the fall breaks into the spring or even just add more breaks to the spring semester in general,” Roberts said. “I just feel like there aren’t enough breaks in the semester.”
The fall semester at HutchCC consists of several breaks including fall break, Thanksgiving break and several one-off days off of school, such as the Monday after Labor Day and recruitment day on an October Friday.
“I think we should try to split up the breaks throughout the year. To me the spring semester seems longer than the fall semester and I think that’s because of the lack of breaks,” Roberts said.
To Nelson, the lack of breaks during the spring semester feels strange.
“I just kind of question why we get only one break in the spring but a bunch in the fall when school has kind of just started,” Nelson said. “I feel like I get a lot more burnt out during the spring semester, even though it goes by faster for me.”
After the five day break, HutchCC will be in session every weekday until May 9, weather permitting.
