Kansas may seem bland and uninteresting, but there is one factor that is always changing and that is the weather. Going from cold to hot and vice versa.

Peyton Sanders, a KWCH Meteorologist, and Maggy Adolf, a Moundridge sophomore at Hutchinson Community College, are familiar with how unique the Kansas weather can be.

“I’ve lived in Kansas my entire life, so I am well acquainted with the weather,” Sanders said. “We get everything, and this time of year, we can have a blizzard and thunderstorms in Kansas at the same time.”

Sanders said he enjoys covering the Kansas weather because it is always changing from tornados to blizzards

Sanders said the only time of the year he doesn’t like is late to mid summer because it is so boring.

Sanders said his favorite time of the year is spring time in Kansas because the weather gets warm after some cold weather. In Hutchisnon, according to AccuWeather, the Feb. 19 high temperature was 7 degrees. By Feb. 25, it was in the lower 70s.

That doesn’t include the wild severe weather.

“Kansas gets tornadoes every year. It is a guarantee in the springtime,” Sanders said. “Kansas in the past 15 years has also seen an increase in earthquakes. Some of them are centered in Kansas, and others are in Oklahoma, but we still feel them here. Kansas never gets hurricanes, but we do sometimes get the tropical remnants from hurricanes that move through the Gulf and work their way up to Kansas.”

Adolf said she never has gotten used to the wild changes.

“I feel like growing up has acclimated me to the weather, but I never get used to the drastic changes it can make,” she said. “I still catch myself thinking how crazy it is to see snow on the ground one day and the next it feel like a nice day in spring. I enjoy the Kansas weather to an extent. The snow and cold are not my favorite but you learn to deal with it.

“The best time a year in my opinion is fall. You’re able to wear a light sweatshirt and still be outside and the trees changing colors are always gorgeous.”
