The Hutchinson Community College men’s track and field team is heading down to the 2025 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 8-9 at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas.

The Blue Dragons recently captured their first Region 6 Indoor team title at Pittsburg State. Scoring in eight events on the final day of competition, they won the team championship with 109 team points.

The team left Wednesday with hopes to get down to Lubbock and get some preparation in.

“We will depart (Wednesday) in the a.m. and arrive in Lubbock tomorrow evening where we will settle in for the night,” Blue Dragons coach Robert Spies said. “We will go to the national indoor venue on Thursday to get in a quick practice to clean up things we could not do today due to weather today. Friday, Saturday it’s time to buckle down and compete.”

The Blue Dragons have 18 individual qualifiers for nationals, along with one relay. Spies has some high expectations for his team this week.

“I can only look at what we have endured throughout the indoor season so far with crazy ice and snow the first part of the season, and followed that with extreme cold weather that had kept us from training efficiently for the majority of the indoor T&F season,” Spies said. “I hope to see our kids produce some quality times and distances and heights then get back home without injury.”

The cold weather and high winds has caused some problems for the team, when it comes to comfortable practicing.

“Our preparation has been better over the past week since concluding regionals,” Spies said. “Today is a whole other story as you can imagine with high winds and cold weather yet again however we worked the best we could through it today.”
