The Hutchinson Community College media team has made a great first impression this semester with the team’s latest promotional video.

The video, recorded by the media team and edited by freshman Preston Reed, was made to promote the all-employee meeting held on Aug. 12.  Instructor and advisor of media production, Bobby Obermite, gave the assignment to Reed with specific instruction.

“He said to make it look fun and awesome, and there were some moments where it was fun and awesome,” Reed said.

However, this idea isn’t what was originally planned.

“The usage of the video was initially not for creative or entertainment purposes. It was for being used for practical, (human resources) type necessities.” Obermite said.

However, looking at the resources and staff that Obermite had, he decided to add a creative twist to it. “For me if I have enough team, equipment, and time to plan, then I want to shoot that in different ways.”

During the shooting, the team used different camera angles to create a more cinematic feel, which is what they later turned into the promo.

“We really picked the highlights, you know, the energy, people enjoying themselves, that kind of thing.” Obermite said.

With the clips that were given to him, Reed began to put the promo together.

“I kind of wanted to make it like a hype video, like for football,” Reed said.

With Obermite’s full trust, Reed worked from home most nights to put together the entire video, and the response to the finished product was shocking for him, especially when one of the responses came from HutchCC president Tricia Paramore.

“I shared it with my peers … and one of those was Dr. Paramore. She really enjoyed it because she felt like it highlighted what they were trying to do with the meeting.” Obermite said.

Paramore discussed how she would like to place the promo video into her newsletter, where she highlights different things around the college.

“I heard from Bobby when he called me, he said, ‘the president likes your video, and she said she might want it to be put on as an advertisement,’” Reed said. Hearing the news, Reed’s once bad day at work immediately turned into a good one.
