Thomas Porter is from Moundridge and this is his first year as a full-time student at Hutchinson Community College. He is a secondary education history major who enjoys the community aspect of Hutchinson Community College, including getting to spend time with classmates inside and outside of class at Challenge on Monday nights.

Porter is featured in this week’s “Student Spotlight”.

What are you most looking forward to after graduation?

TP: I guess seeing somewhere other than Hutch and Moundridge, because I have never really been out of the area. Going on somewhere else would be exciting.

What is your go to snack or drink after a long day of classes?

TP: I’m a big chips and salsa guy.

What does your class schedule look like?

TP: I am taking Intro to Political Science, American History, World Geography, General Biology, and Psychology.

What does your living situation look like? Who do you live with?

I live with a roommate, his name is Ethan. We live like a block away from campus in an apartment.

What is a song that you currently have on repeat?

I would say “Praise God” by Kanye West.

Do you work? If so, what do you do?

I don’t work right now. I worked over the summer, but I do not have a job at the moment.

What was the last TV show you binge watched?

Gravity Falls, my roommate and I just watched all of it because we were bored.

What is one item you cannot live without that is not a necessity?

Probably hoodies, like I love hoodies. Or my phone, I don’t know.

What is the best idea you have ever had for a business?

I had one with my boss at work that we were going to start. It was like Google but for construction, it was called General Contacter instead of general contractor. And you could look up the different places you needed for electricians or flooring or framers. It turns out it already exists, but I was working for like, 12 hours that day and I was really proud of it until I got home and realized it already existed.

What is one question you wish people would ask you less?

I guess I wouldn’t say ask it less, I would just say reword it. It is always like, “How’s college?” Like what part? Like the classes suck, but everything else is great. There is a lot of going on at college right now. When people say, “How are classes?” or “How is living on your own?” I like that better. Yeah, “How is college?” is probably what I wish I got asked less.

What is one thing you’ve learned recently?

Time management is wildly important. Like don’t ever doubt how long your homework is going to take you. Don’t wait till 11 o’clock to start something, because it will be due in 59 minutes and you should have given yourself like 2 and a half hours.

What are your plans after HutchCC?

I want to be a teacher, I want to go and teach somewhere. I don’t really know where I am going to go after HCC yet, but teaching is the end goal.

What are some of your hobbies or interests?

I really like watching sports and I’m a big sports guy. Me and my roommate watch sports pretty much all of the time. Or I’m usually at some sort of church event like, Challenge or bible study or whatever it is.
