The No. 4-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team managed yet another win over the Colby Trojans on Saturday night at the Sports Arena, beating the Trojans 98-56.
The Blue Dragons shot 52.6 percent Saturday in improving to 21-0 overall.
The Blue Dragons defense didn’t allow the Trojans to score in the first five minutes, helping the Blue Dragons lead 20-7 at the end of quarter one. By halftime, the Blue Dragons had made 10 of 14 shots and led 44-24.
The Blue Dragons started the second half with a 20-5 run and led at the end of the third 64-29.
Hutch dominated the boards 52-24 and had a total 28 assists.
Sophomore Jada Mickens scored a season-high 20 points. Freshman Mikayla Mickens had 20 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Dejanae Roebuck is now in Blue Dragon top 20 career scoring after an 18-point, six-rebound performance.
Milan Schimmel scored 10 points, and added four assists and three rebounds. Keeley Tini finished with nine points and 12 rebounds. Abby Ogle, Lauryn Mapusua and Makayla Johnson had eight points each.
Men’s basketball – The No. 17 Blue Dragons gave their head coach his 600th junior college coaching win Saturday against Colby, as the Blue Dragons won 95-76.
The Blue Dragons improved to 18-3 overall and 9-3 in the Jayhawk West.
The Blue Dragons were on fire behind the 3-point line, hitting four 3-pointers in the first half and leading 44-27. The Blue Dragons then started the second half hitting six 3-pointers in the first 7:46, moving the lead to 68-43.
D.J. Mitchell hit 4 of 4 from the 3-point range in finishing with 17 points. Chris Giles’ first four shots were from long range hitting 4 of 5, finishing with 16 points. Tyler Brown followed with three 3-pointers, finishing with nine points.
Sophomore James Rojas returned from injury and finished with 16 points. Saquan Singleton had eight points and eight rebounds.
Men’s track – Freshman sprinter Jared Scott was one of the Blue Dragons that had two outstanding qualifying marks in the 2019 indoor season opener on Saturday at the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence.
Scott finished second in the 60 meters with a time of 6.91 seconds and won the 200 meters with a time of 21.98 seconds at the University of Kansas’ Anschutz Sports Pavilion.
Blue Dragon freshman Sylvestre Kibarar, placed eighth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:49.70.
The Blue Dragons have two different meets this week. One at the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska and another at the Fred Beile Classic in Crete, Nebraska.
Women’s track – Hannah Smith is back, announcing her return at the Jayhawk Classic.
Smith, who didn’t compete last year, was third in the weight throw, throwing a distance of 52 feet, one- half inch, a Blue Dragon school record.
Sophomore Jewell Bolden finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.13.seconds.
Bolden also finished fifth in the long time with a leap of 17-8.
Freshman Sheila Too placed third in the 3,000 meters with a time 11:23.59.
Freshman Gabby Collins was sixth in the 1,000 meters in 3:18.18.
The Blue Dragons will run at two different meets this weekend the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska and the Fred Beile Classic in Crete, Nebraska.
