Next up for the Dillon Lecture Series is Janelle Shane, an Artificial Intelligence humorist. Shane will speak at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Sports Arena.
Janelle Shane started at Michigan State University studying engineering. After Michigan State she went to University of St. Andrews to get her masters in physics. While at St. Andrews she worked with Professor Kishan Dholakia. Shane became a graduate student at the University of California-San Diego.
Shane writes and talks about Artificial Intelligence and how it makes life weirder. Some of Shane’s most noticeable experiments are where she has A.I. try to invent things like recipes, cat names, paint colors, and candy heart messages.
“You Look Like a Thing and I Love You: How AI Works and Why It’s Making the World a Weirder Place” is Shane’s book. The book shows more unique experiments that Shane does with A.I. while adding cartoons and illustrations to it. The book is a quick study for people to learn that A.I. is everywhere but it should not be praised due to all of its faults.
Along with studying A.I., Shane is a research scientist specializing in making computer- controlled holograms so people can study the brain.
Shane works at Boulder Nonlinear Systems in Colorado where she develops models for the International Space Station. While working for the Space Station, Shane is also helping develop wind sensor technologies for unmanned aerial vehicles.
